Wearing a padded bra or swimsuit is a necessity for those of us who are not naturally endowed and want to look perky and fabulous in a bikini, but is it something we want our 7 year olds wearing? Abercrombie & Fitch Kids thought so, when they released the padded “push-up triagle” bikini top for 7 -16 year olds online. Can you imagine your little girl in a sexy push-up bathing suit? Instead of promoting a healthy self-image for kids, Abercrombie is asking them to grow up too fast by making them want to look like Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Models. This is a dangerous message to convey.
This is the same company that sold thong underwear with catch phrases like “eye candy” and “wink wink” on them to 10 year olds back in 2002. Seriously? Who is the head of the design team and were they ’high’ when they came up with these lines?
There has been a media frenzy over this issue and Abercrombie has had to succumb to the pressure. They changed the name of the bathing suit from “push-up” to “triangle” top but the padding in the suit still remains.
Thoughts?
