Layering with Alexander Wang

If you love fashion the way we do at Hush you will be no
stranger to the genius known as Alexander Wang.
Over the past few years this designer has come to revolutionize the way
we view jersey and cotton t shirting and has created an art form in its
usage.

This season, Wang has shown us that one of the best ways to
wear his pieces is to layer them – this is no easy task as the pieces you
choose to mix and match have to complement each other and your body
perfectly.  We love the look of wearing a
long dress with a loose long sleeve strategically worn over it, or a silk short
sleeve shift dress with a cotton long sleeve t shirt underneath it.  This is Alexander Wang styling at it’s very
best!

The best part of Wang’s items is the seasonal versatility it
provides.  By layering the pieces, you
can turn a long summer maxi into a perfect winter dress all by adding an item
or two.

With rumours flying within the fashion world that Wang is a
contender to take over John Galliano’s head designer position at the house of
Dior, we hope that Alexander Wang will stay true to his calling and continue to
show us new ways of viewing style basics by turning them into chic couture.

    Top 10 Shoe Trends

There’s something for everyone when it comes to shoes this fall and winter.  Bright hues are no longer Au Currant, instead make room for neutrals like black, stone, beige, chocolate, khaki and dark blue.  Also metallics are huge this season.  Burgundy and red are also very on trend.  Pull out your pointed toe shoes from the past.  They are back in style.  Don’t despair though, because round toe is still popular.  Here are the top 10 trends were seeing this fall and winter for shoes.

    1. Reptile Skins

Reptile leather is very trendy for fall and winter.  The Louis Vuitton boots are stunning and go with any dress or skirt.  This reptile skin Prada boot is a standout as well.

    2.  Patent Leather

Patent leather looks stunning and sexy for day or night.  This pair by Marc Jacobs would work well with the new midi length skirt or dress.

    3. Suede

Michael Kors makes this pair of suede over the knee boots.  They work with skinny jeans, a skirt or a dress.  I love the slate grey colour.

    4. Buckles

Shoes or boots with a multitude of buckles are hot this season.  This pair by Emilio Pucci are sexy and also incorporate the spiked heel trend as well.

    5. Spiked Heels

This pair of Brian Atwood pumps also incorporate the animal skin trend.  Stilettos are sexy for night or day and elongate the legs.

    6. Platforms and Wedges

The wedge and platform shoe/boot trend, continues into fall and winter.  This season it’s a more modest and elegant look. This pair is by Michael Kors.

    7. Lacing

Balmain makes this pair of lace up ankle boots.  This trend used to be delicate and feminine but has now transformed into a sexier version.

    8. Chunky Heels

These come in all kinds of versions from classic pumps, to an oxford shoe to a rocker boot.

    9. Satin Shoes

These are not for everyday.  Save this trend for a special occasion.

    10. Socks in Shoes

This is my favourite of all the shoe trends.  If this is a little too daring for you, try wearing tights with  your shoes.

      Fall Trends/Part 1

Here is a peak at some of the hottest fall fashion trends to incorporate into your wardrobe.

      1. Bold Red

Bright red is everywhere this fall.  Choose to incorporate this trend with a fabulous pair of shoes, a sexy red dress, skinny jeans, or in a purse, like this Tory Burch cherry red bag.  Red is hot, hot, hot.

      2. Feminine Menswear

It’s all about menswear with a feminine twist.  Pair tweed masculine trousers with  an “of-the-moment” bow blouse.  Throw on a tuxedo jacket with a pair of skinny pants and high heels.  It’s a great look.

      3. Chunky cable knits

The chunky sweater is my favourite fall fashion item.  Wear it cropped length over high waisted pants, hip-length or as a cardigan.  The sweater is a timeless item in any one’s wardrobe.

      4. Midi-length dresses

The midi-length dress is still hot for fall.   Wear in a silky material with pleats for a mad-men look but add a pair of chunky platform heels to edge it up.

      5. Metal Chokers

Gold, silver, any type of metal choker is a great statement necklace to spice up your fall wardrobe.  Pair it with a sleek, clean-lined top, or dress or a girly top to modernize your look.

The Row: The Big Bag Theory

Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, the dynamic design duo behind legendary label Elizabeth & James and now their high-end line the Row, are launching a new line of luxe bags for fall.  Their goal is not to become the “it” bag but to be an iconic classic bag line.  Chic, sophisticated and clean lines define their style sensibility when it comes to purses.  They want each bag to serve a purpose and have bequeathed a unique name to each of their handbags.  There is the Day Luxe, a structured top-handle tote bag, the Classic Shoulder with a long messenger strap, the Metal Frame which comes in Alligator, Lizard and Ostrich.  They also have the Doctor Bag, and the Twin Mini.  They are the ideal complement to their fall collection of statement furs and coats.  On the low end the mini is $4700.00 and the high may reach the Birkin level.  Available at Barneys and specialty boutiques for fall 2011.

The Return of Chaiken and Capone

In the early 90′s if you were looking to purchase a great pair of basic pants you headed to your nearest boutique to pick up a Chaiken and Capone pant. They were the hottest pants around as their fit was basically flawless and looked great on virtually every body type due to their elasticity and cotton stretch.

However after being on the “must have” list for a few years, the line went down hill and Chaiken lost its popularity and charm.

In an attempt to re-launch the line this spring, Julie Chaiken has created a fresh new take on the classic collection, filled with an assortment of pants in a variety of silhouettes all priced at approximately $200.00. Chaiken has also included an assortment of dresses, shirts, shorts and skirts to accompany her basic pants.

Chaiken and Capone is currently being sold at Neiman Marcus, but is sure to make its Canadian debut for fall 2011.

The Birth of a New Denim Line/Ronan Jeans

The co-founder of Rock & Republic, a denim line known for their overly embellished pockets and extra-long length have created a new line of jeans called Ronan.  Where Rock & Republic were more of a night-time jean, Ronan is touted as a jean for every day.  Their focus is on simplicity in their wash and cut.  They have created a line of skinnies, wide leg, and bootcuts and they come in a range of inseams.  The jeans still have the same body con softness.  Their goal is to combine understated luxury with clean design.  The pocket detailing is reminiscent of the former brand.  The motorcycle jeggings are my personal favourite for fall and would look great with a loose tee or sweater.  They also have carry men’s jeans as well.  Ronan will be in stores in the Fall with the jeans retailing between $140 to $180.

                Shorts For Every Body Type

The summer weather is fast approaching and there is no better warm weather staple than a pair of shorts.  Shorts are so versatile and can be worn day or night depending on how you style them.  One might think that shorts are only for the really tall and skinny women.  Here at Hush we say “Au Contraire.”  Here are some tips to find the perfect pair of shorts for your body.

                Short & Pleated Shorts

These are great for more boyish frames.  The pleats adds the illusion of curves and the shorter length elongates the legs.  Wear with a platform sandal and a more fitted top which can be tucked in or worn out.  Avoid this style if you’re on the hippy side.

                Short & Flat Front Shorts

Here Vanessa Hudgens is sporting a pair of short shorts with a flat front.  She pairs it with a blousier top and cool ankle boots for a very chic day look.  Short flat-front shorts are great for curvier and petite frames.  Avoid if you’re busty as the length will throw off your proportions.  The short fitted shorts will also accentuate hips and won’t be flattering on someone who is a bit hippy.

                Mid-length Utillity Shorts

These Mid-length Utility Shorts are great for hippier frames as the length and details are slimming.  Avoid if you’re petite, the longer length will cut you off and make you appear even shorter.

                Mid-length & Full Shorts

These are great for pear shape and bustier frames as they balance out you’re top half.  They also skim the curves to create an even frame.  Avoid if you have a shorter torso.

                Mid-length & Cuffed Shorts

These are great for curvier frames as the simple cut is very slimming.  Avoid if you have a large behind or bigger thighs.  These are also great on slim tall frames.  Throw on a pair of heels and a great top for a chic night time look.

                  The New Bee Hive

If you turned on the radio at any given time in the year 2007 you would hear the incredible voice of retro singer Amy Winehouse. While her tunes are no longer topping the charts, her inspiration in the world of celebrity hair styles has remained strong.

With the “Mad Men” look current and trendy, we are seeing a resurgance of the bee hive style being worn by many top celebrities. Unlike its earlier years of the 50′s and 60′s, we are seeing this look predominately styled as an evening look with formal gowns or cocktail wear.

If this is a style that you are eager to try, channel stars like Katherine Heigl and update it with a headband or two for a more up to date look.

While we love the bee hive and its return to the spotlight we are not sure if its necessarily the chicest look in the book. What do you think? Is the beehive a do or a do not?

Let us know…we would love to hear your thoughts.

                    Graphic Tee’s

One of my favourite go to pieces is the graphic vintage inspired tee.  They are timeless, and always remain a wardrobe staple .  Throw it on with a pair of faded wide jeans for a 70’s look, add a fitted blazer, a pair of skinny’s and tall boots like Fergie, pair it with leather leggings and platform pumps for a rocker chic look, or just wear it with cut-off denim shorts and you’re good to go.  It is such an easy way to create an edgy look with very little effort.  Add an element of creativity, and you can elevate this piece to a very fashion-forward look.  Gwenyth put a whole new spin on the trend, by tucking it into a mini skirt as did Beyonce by hanging it loosely over a mini skirt and adding a shrunken leather jacket.    One of my favourite takes on this trend is to pair it with a full maxi or mini skirt as seen on SJP in Sex and the City 2 in her J’adore Dior tee.  I actually gasped out loud when I saw it for the first time.  Annalyne Mccord also rocked this look with an oversized logo’d tee, a pair of short denim shorts and ankle boots.   To steal this look check out some cool graphic tee’s available online now

                    .

                    1. This is the Dangerous Scorpion slouchy tee by Chaser LA, one of my favourite vintage inspired t-shirt designers.  It is $49.00.

                    2. By Boyfriend/Girlfriend, the John & Yoko #2 tee is fabulous with the shorts but would also look great half tucked in with a black blazer on top, to dress it up.  It is $94.33.

                    3.  Also by Chaser LA, this John Lee Hooker Vintage Wash tee is $49.00 and looks great paired with skinny jeans and platform sandals.  Tuck it in to a full skirt or crinolin for an of the moment look.

                    4. The Johnny Depp Baby tee by D&G is $175.00.  Tuck it into a high-waisted pair of shorts for a retro look or wear it over skinny capri length pants and platform pumps  to take it into night.

                    5. This is a great take on the striped trend.  It is Torn by Ronny Kobo and it’s $73.05.  Pair it with a great pair of crimson red capri skinny jeans, motorcycle boots and a leather jacket, or as is with a great pair of shorts and heels.

                    6.  And finally, the Antique Garden Rose tee is by Wildfox and it’s $137.46.  It looks great with a short full skirt and a denim jacket or edge it up with a full maxi skirt and leather jacket.
